The Hall’s Roots - Fairmont High School’s Athletic Hall of Fame was approved by the district’s Board of Education in the late 1980s as a way of honoring the tradition of excellence established by Cardinal athletes down through the  decades. Former Fairmont athletic director and legendary Cardinal football coach Tom Mahoney Sr., like with so many of his other contributions to high school athletics throughout the state during his 50-plus years in the educational field, laid the foundation for Fairmont’s Hall of Fame by creating a nine-person selection committee that first met in mid-1989. Through a series of meetings, the committee carefully critiques each and every Hall of Fame nomination.   After much discussion, debate and confirmation of the submitted information, the members cast their votes for each year’s group of inductees. After a four-year hiatus, original committee member and charter Hall of Fame member Judy Lohrenz — along with current Fairmont athletic director and grandson of the Hall’s creator, Mat Mahoney — reorganized and rebuilt the committee in 2013 with the intention of restoring a vital part of Cardinal athletics’ rich history. Eight-by-10 photographs of all inductees are displayed in the Hall of Fame section on thesecond floor of the high school gymnasium’s concession lobby.

The following are the Fairmont Athletic Hall of Fame requirements for coaches, athletes and special contributors:

ATHLETES: Must be out of high school for at least 15 years; must have shown mature accomplishments since graduation. The selection committee also shall consider any of the following criteria for selection purposes: Played on a conference championship team; played on a team in regional or sectional competition; qualified for a state tournament or meet as an individual or as part of a team; earned a varsity letter in more than one sport or lettered at least twice in one sport; earned a state championship place as an individual; or was named to an all-conference, all-section, all-star or media team.

COACHES: The committee recently waived the waiting period, although a coach must have coached a minimum of 10 years at Fairmont High School. The committee also shall consider the following criteria for selection: Coached a team that  won a conference championship; coached a team in regional or sectional competition; coached a team or an individual  in state competition; had a minimum winning clip of 68 percent; or earned a state and/or national coaching award.

SPECIAL CONTRIBUTORS: Members of the community who have made a major contribution to promoting Fairmont athletics as determined by the selection committee such as a Booster Club member, volunteer coaches,  school support personnel, media members, etc.Fairmont School District 2752 is in indebted to all of the outstanding athletes, coaches and support personnel who have made Fairmont athletics what they are today. The committee enlists your support for supplying nominees. Applications will be kept on file and reviewed annually.
